25 words with a similar origin in English and Spanish

Written by Maria Fernandez

One of the most encouraging things you find when you're learning new Spanish words is how many of them have the same origin as their English translation.

A quick glance at the first few dialogs of this course, for instance, brings you: hotel, vacaciones, cafetería, doble, recepcionista, pasaporte, televisión, mineral, patata, chocolate, and dozens more.

If you look deeper, however, you'll find many more Spanish words you can easily remember when you associate them to English words of the same origin. This, in my view, is even more encouraging, and no doubt the most efficient way to learn Spanish vocabulary fast.

To help you make those associations, I've brought you here 25 words you can find in the dialogs throughout this course. To hear them, click on the Spanish words in orange:

encantado - delighted - enchanted

la habitación - the bedroom - cohabitation

claro - of course - clear

libres - vacant - liberty
