Spanish pronunciation - How to master the double 'r'

Written by Maria Fernandez

There are a few sounds that make the Spanish pronunciation a real challenge. The double 'r' is one of the worst.

Mastering the double 'r' will take you time and determination, but if you follow the tips in this article you can soon improve your pronunciation of this sound.

In the Lesson 23 pronunciation movie of this Spanish for Beginners course you can practice saying the double 'r' through many interactive examples. One of them is the sentence:

Curro Arroyo arregla pararrayos en Monterrey

Curro Arroyo repairs lightning rods in Monterrey

Here I'm going to guide you through a technique that will help you say this sentence like a native.

First we're going to practice the five 'rr + vowel' sounds. Click on them to hear them said by native speakers.

rra rre rri rri rro rru

Now we're going to concentrate on one sound at a time. Click on it and then repeat it out loud after the speaker:

rra

Repeat it several times, always listening to the recording first.

rra

At this point your pronunciation is likely to be 'imperfect'. Don't worry. Practice over time is what's going to make the real difference.

Once you've said 'rra' a few times, move on to the next cluster and practice it the same way. :

rre

Then practice the remaining three sounds, one at a time:

rri rro rru

Now we're going to move on to the individual words in the sentence we saw at the beginning of this article. Click on them to hear them said by native speakers:
