How do you learn new Spanish vocabulary at a good pace? I've taught Spanish for many years and this has always been a topic of discussion with my students.
They all agree: once you've passed the first hurdles, expanding your Spanish vocabulary isn't easy. Many language courses focus a lot on grammar, specially verbs, and don't introduce you to new words fast enough. Others teach you vocabulary that you're rarely going to use.
As a student of foreign language myself, I find that the fastest way to learn new vocabulary is with the help of audio material. There are some courses on cd-rom that are quite good, but the course that I most often recommend to my students is the Puerta del Sol audio magazine.
It's a bimonthly publication on a 60-minute cd plus a printed magazine with the full transcript and a 500+ word Spanish - English glossary. What I particularly like about it is that it comes along with another cd with audio flashcards where you can practise the most useful words that come up in every issue.
This is the fastest and most efficient way of learning new vocabulary I've experienced, and the most fun too. If you want to see and hear what this audio magazine looks and sounds like, you can play the free sample below.
Puerta del Sol offers you several subscription options: 6 months for $79, 1 year for $129 and 2 years for $239.
