Exercises: Pronunciation exercise. Words to watch out for.
Today we're going to concentrate on the words that look and sound similar in English and Spanish, and in particular we're going to see their pronunciation differences.
Listen to these six words: el garaje, la entrada, la información, la zona, las instrucciones, varios.
Make sure you're saying these six words correctly. Notice, for instance, how I say 'garaje', with a 'je' sound at the end: 'garaje'. 'La entrada' - entrance - has the stress on the middle 'a', la entrada', unlike in the English word 'entrance'. La información is stressed on the last 'o', la información. Notice also how I say the 'a', información. La zona has an 'a' at the end, instead of an 'e' like in English. Las instrucciones, the instructions, is stressed on the 'o'. Notice also how I say the letter 'u', instrucciones. Finally, listen to how I say the 'v' in varios. This 'v' sounds just like a 'b', varios.
Here's a good pronunciation tip: Always keep an eye on how you say words that look very similar in English and Spanish. Make sure you're saying the vowels correctly (a, e, i, o, u) and that you're not saying the 'v' wrong, or sounding the 'h', or mispronouncing the 'g', the 'j' or other letters that sound different in both languages.
