| Customer Reviews: Review of the free demo May 6, 2007 Shantimar (Greece) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I haven't yet bought this product, but I probably will, based on the demo available on auralog.com. I'll tell you my impressions.
Let me say up front that I'm Italian, and I have studied a little Spanish when I was younger with the Assimil book - excellent!), so I do understand even things that are not taught. I don't know what would happen if it were a completely unknown language.
Plus: There are a number of nifty features. Clicking on a word you can get translation, pronunciation etc... The pronunciation is taken care of very thoroughly, and the speech recognition, when it works (it sometimes doesn't, as reviewers of other Auralog products have noted), is a good tool. It gives you many different activities on each lesson. It has grammar expanations, contrary to some "immersion" progrmames which expect you to infer the grammar from seeing something often enough - I find this extremely frustrating, because we are not children listening to a language every day, from our mother's belly up to the age of speaking it, so we cannot possibly learn the way children do. Neither do we have the time they have, or their uncluttered minds. So this is a plus. The speakers' voices are natural and pleasant.
Minus:
The interface is a bit dry, but this is not important.
Each screen takes ages to load. All right, maybe it's my machine, but I have a 2,16 GHz processor with 512 MB memory and run Windows XP, how many people have much more than that?
One of the activities is the crossword puzzles. If you don't do them (in guided mode) the programme will keep repeating that you haven't done everything right. OK, so let's do them. It's a little laborious, finding with the mouse and clicking every letter. Big surprise: many (most) of the words are completely new, unknown words, not those taught in the lesson to which the crossword belongs. I checked all the crosswords, and in all of them, more than half of the longer words are completely unknown, no way you could guess them.
In the grammar examples too, you see sentences with words you haven't been taught. So how these examples are going to help you?
I repeat, I am Italian and for me Spanish is more or less understandable even if I don't study it, but just imagine if I wanted to learn, say, Dutch, Chinese or Arabic?
This is my impression so far. The positive sides are more than the negative, in my opinion, although it's not so perfect as it claims.
UPDATE:
A person from Auralog explained to me that in the normal, buyable version, all the words in the crossword puzzles are taught beforehand.
