Berlitz Spanish Premium is a good supplement for those learning Spanish in a classroom or through an immersion video or audio course. This program has two strengths. First, it builds vocabulary using Transparent Languages Before You Knew It (BYKI) flashcard system. If you want to test drive BYKI for free, you can download an express version at Transparent's website ([...]). Unfortunately, the Berlitz version doesn't allow you to build your own flashcards which you can do if you buy Transparent's Deluxe BYKI software Byki Learn Spanish Language Tutor Software & Audio Learning CD-ROM for Windows & Mac - Version 4. However, there are a lot of free BYKI vocabulary lists in many languages on the Transparent site that you can download into the Berlitz software. There are BYKI vocabulary lists for many of the Spanish textbooks used in schools which makes the Berlitz software useful for students. I found this to be a great bonus that the Berlitz documentation doesn't mention.
There are mp3 versions of the flashcards which can be imported into iTunes and put on an iPod / iPad. I didn't find this of much value since it includes just the audio and the flashcard itself doesn't show up on the iPod screen.
This package bundles in the Berlitz Spanish Guaranteed Berlitz Spanish Guaranteed (Berlitz Guaranteed) (Spanish Edition) audio course which I found helpful to listen to while driving. As another reviewer mentioned, this audio course is for Castilian Spanish not Latin American Spanish so you may find some of the pronunciation unusual. It feels like a completely separate course since there is no connection to the computer course.
You won't be fluent in Spanish by using this software, but if you're already taking another course, this software will complement and reinforce what you're learning there.

For effortless installation on Mac just follow the instructions described by M. Sheperd on 2008-09-08. (Thanks a lot for this simple and very helpful tip.)
Trouble Installing Berlitz on a Mac
I too had issues installing on a Mac. What worked for me was to click and drag the installation icon onto my desktop, and then run the install from the icon on my desktop. Then go to you applications (programmes) folder and voila.

The Berlitz Spanish is actually fun. I just popped it into the computer and my kids and I had fun learning Spanish. It is pretty easy to catch onto. It did go a little fast especially for the kids and there were some words I couldn't understand how to sound them out. It isn't bad if you take the time to listen and learn. On a scale of 1-10 I would give it an 8.

I was so excited to try out Berlitz Spanish Premier. It comes with 4 audio CDs. The program has many interesting components. I liked the flashcards and the speech analysis. You can also practice your Spanish on your Ipod or your car radio...a definite plus. Another thing I liked in this "day of print your own manuals", this program came with a printed manual with over 200 pages. A beginner really needs to sit down with the manual and read it first. I found this software to be a great way to spruce up your Spanish skills but I wouldn't recommend it for someone who has no background in Spanish. I did like there was a six month money back guarantee. You can't get better than that.

Berlitz Premier Spanish is a great quality program for learning Spanish. It contains many features and activities for you to become fluent in reading, understanding, and speaking Spanish. When you first start the program it asks for your name so it can keep track of your progress. I think this is a great feature so that you can always look up how far you have come and how well you did in certain areas. If you did not do so well in one area, you can go back and redo it.
The first screen gives you an option of two books. You can choose reading Spanish or conversation Spanish. I started with the Reading Book. There are a bunch of lessons. Each lesson teaches you specific words. The lesson repeats the words enough times that when you finish the lesson you know those words very well.
There are a few games that you can play using the specific lesson that you are working on to make it more exciting. Also, you can opt to take tests on those lessons thereby ensuring you have mastered the lesson before moving on to the next lesson. I really liked those features and felt really accomplished afterward.
The Conversation book teaches you additional Spanish words. You can also view a video of someone using the words in a conversation and you type your response in the box. This is great because it puts the words in a context and helps you to learn how to speak Spanish in a more conversational way. You can also hook up a microphone to your computer and hear yourself saying the words. You can test yourself to make sure you are saying the words correctly.
All in all, this program is definitely worth it if you want to learn Spanish or be able to follow some conversational Spanish. You will feel accomplished after each lesson and will learn Spanish quickly and well.
